Corporate VC remains one of the fastest growing segments of the venture ecosystem. Their growth and subsequent impact on a global level has propelled them into the role of “innovation change agent” within the parent organization and beyond. Attendees will learn about Keyhole – a case study that incorporates how strategic investing not only provided value to its initial strategic investor, but also how that technology was acquired by Google and evolved to become Google Earth. Panelists include Steve Bowsher and George Hoyem from In-Q-Tel; Noah Doyle, Keyhole Founder turned venture capitalist; and Michael Jones from Google. He will provide an overview of international trends influencing the U.S. healthcare system. Programming will also conclude with a roundtable discussion with panelists representing the provider, payor, large integrated healthcare system and industry perspective on the topic: “How will the new healthcare system value, reward and encourage innovation?” - Young VCs | 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Venture capital has always been an apprenticeship business, yet tomorrow’s industry will certainly look different from today’s. That’s why junior VCs must maximize their opportunities to learn not only from senior firm members and other VC veterans, but also from their peers and the pioneers shaping the venture ecosystem’s future. This two-panel Deep Dive session is a must for young professionals looking to build on their industry knowledge, hone their craft and position themselves for future leadership in the venture capital industry. Topics will include discussion around how operational experience makes you a better VC and strategies on how to improve deal sourcing as a junior member of the firm. - Limited Partners | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
For the first time ever, NVCA is convening a Deep Dive for limited partners. This two-panel session will provide a unique opportunity for limited partners who are active in the venture capital asset class to meet, discuss and collaborate on the key issues they face investing in venture capital. Some of the questions this session will seek to answer include: Is it time to rethink the venture fund structure? How does early stage and growth equity investing fit into a one-size-fits-all structure? Is there a better way to optimize performance for manager and investor alike? We’ll also investigate different approaches to portfolio construction, including LP’s heightened interest in co-investments and secondaries, whether there’s a contrarian bet to be made in healthcare venture, and what balance by state and geography of investment is appropriate. - Women in VC | 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Despite the rise of a new generation of women leading high-tech companies, the talents and insights of women remain under-utilized within the venture and innovation ecosystems. This deep dive will examine opportunities for harnessing more of their potential energy in powering America’s innovation economy. Topics will include how to encourage more women to participate in the entrepreneurial process, cultivate leadership in the venture space, and challenge the gender stereotypes in ways that neutralize them – not reinforce them. Attendees will have the opportunity to share experiences, strategies and visions for success, as well as chart future courses for women in venture capital. - Growth Equity | 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
With a year under its belt, the NVCA Growth Equity Group will provide later-stage investors with insights from limited partners and thought leaders within this emerging category. Growth Equity Deep Dive program elements will include an LP panel discussion of growth equity investing, a presentation of the results of a new NVCA study of employment growth in growth equity funded portfolio companies and an interview with a leading venture capital industry researcher from the academic world.
