The traditional roles of universities – Creation of knowledge through research, Transfer of knowledge through teaching, and Using knowledge through tech transfer – will remain in the coming decades, but their relative extent and nature are certain to change.
The nature of all these changes is still not fully understood: while the scope of academic knowledge is growing exponentially, and universities must find a way to cover its entire breadth to some extent, they are slow to identify the best manner they can adapt and integrate into the overall venture ecosystem – which is itself is a moving target.
